Resumen

Translation and linguistic variety: Towards a "model of dialectal reconstruction"

Abstract. The presence of markers of linguistic variation plays an essential role for the construction of meaning in literary works and therefore it is an aspect that translators must try to recover in the target text. This article presents a proposal called the Model of Dialect Reconstruction, which is based on the creation and tagging of a corpus of literary works that exhibit markers of variation. The tag set helps identify what mechanisms are used in those works to mark variation. The corpus can be used by translators as a tool to discover such mechanisms and then apply them in their translations so that the target text exhibits variation. The article discusses the role of the translator in regards to variation, describes the model including the process of the creation of two corpora, presents some data emanating from them and prides a sample text where dialect reconstruction is applied.
